How Much to Tip While Staying in Five Star Mumbai Hotels

Indian and international tourists are always concerned about tip culture while touring in India. Even the fussiest of travelers are unable to estimate the right amount that should be given as tip. When it comes to Indian tourists, they are little less generous in paying gratuities as compared to guests from western countries. One of the most important aspects of travelling a foreign country is finding the right kind of hotel as per your needs and requirements. So while opting for stay in five star Mumbai hotels, it becomes essential for guests to know about the norms of tipping in the city. Listed below are the few arenas of luxury hotels in Mumbai that should not be overlooked while paying gratuities to the service providers.

1. Guests planning to stay in five star Hotels in Mumbai are hardly concerned about the budget issues. The kind of accommodation alternatives one chooses to stay in speak a lot about the financial status of the person. Therefore, guests staying in Presidential or Club Suites are obviously expected to pay more gratuity than someone in a deluxe room. Kindly pay something extra to the personal butler appointed for you as he takes extra care to set up your meal. The amount of tip should range between INR 500 to 1000 per day.

2. If there is a wine sommelier/ steward appointed at the bar, the ideal gratuity to be paid is 15 to 20% of the wine bill. It is advisable to use discretion depending upon how much service was provided (like did he offered the latest and best wine out of the stock). If he offers a classy wine brand, you must cap your tip to a reasonable amount say Rs.500.

3. As per the recent survey, Mumbai customers does not pay tip if service charges is levied on the bill. But if you pay gratuity other than the service charge and strike a good rapport with the restaurant staff, you are assured with a five star service. A tip equivalent to 10-15% of the total bill is sufficient.

4. Similarly, the man at the concierge must be give a tip depending upon the level of service provided. For instance, if they arrange movie tickets or made advance reservations in the restaurant, a tip of INR 200-300 is truly appropriate. If hotel staff made special arrangements for you such as anniversary party or candle light dinner, you must tip them at the end of the day. Suggested tip: INR 1500-2000 for entire staff.

Tipping is a matter of personal choice. However, there are no set rules and regulation for paying gratuity amount. It is basically a reward for the competent and attentive service.
